New research has shown for the first time that e-cigarettes with nicotine cause a stiffening of the arteries in humans. This has important implications for the use of e-cigarettes, as arterial stiffness is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in later life.

Normal weight individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure or hyperlipidemia showed similar risk

Individuals who are metabolically healthy obese and underweight are at a higher risk of heart disease compared to metabolically healthy normal weight individuals, according to the largest study to date comparing weight and metabolic status to cardiovascular risk, published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Normal weight individuals with metabolic abnormalities showed similar risk as those who were healthy obese and healthy underweight.

The study, by Imperial College London and University of Glasgow, focused on men with high levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol and no other risk factors or signs of heart disease.

Previous research has shown the benefit of statins for reducing high cholesterol and heart disease risk amongst different patient populations. However, until now there has been no conclusive evidence from trials for current guidelines on statin usage for people with very high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (above 4.90mmol/L) and no established heart disease.

Many dietary studies have suggested that high intake is associated with a reduced risk of various disorders. Clinical trials have also shown beneficial anti-inflammatory effects in patients taking omega-3 supplements.
