Two women are holding a man down on a bed. One presses her fist against his head, so he can’t raise it from the mattress, while her companion pins his torso in place. They are well-built with powerful arms but even so it takes their combined strength to keep their victim immobilised as one of them cuts through his throat with a sword. Blood spurts from deep red geysers as she saws. Her victim’s eyes are wide open. He knows exactly what is happening to him.

Family doctors are better placed than other professions to see what is wrong with all parts of healthcare and better placed to recognise the value of collaborative solutions. Most of the world came to recognise this as long ago as 1978 at the Alma Ata consensus conference and Starfield has demonstrated it in her comparison of healthcare systems – high quality, cost – efficient healthcare needs to have broad – visioned primary care at its heart.

Some 130 years after the death of the “most popular German painter”, the Leopold Museum is presenting the first exhibition on the artist Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885), whose oeuvre is commonly seen as closely allied to the Biedermeier period and the definitions of tranquility, petit bourgeois idylls and philistinism associated with it.

The Italian painter Enrico Baj, born in Milan in 1924, graduated in law while attending Brera Academy, founder of the Nuclear Movement was involved in Italian and international avant-garde movements, and from 1950 exhibited his works regularly in Paris. In over 50 years of activity Baj never stopped to try out and to be renewed, both in choosing themes and in using different pictorial and engraving techniques, among which also collage with a variety of materials (fabric, braid, buttons, lace, medals, coloured glass, mirror fragments, Meccano and Lego parts, articles of everyday use).
